Parental support for homework is essential. Monitor homework to make certain that it is completed, and that your child is able to do it. If your child is having difficulty with homework, this may be an early warning sign of a problem that you should discuss with your child’s teacher. Homework is a window into what is being taught in the classroom. If you know what your child is studying, you can take advantage of opportunities to extend that learning.

Parents can help their children organise for homework in the following ways:

  • set aside a place for homework to be done; this can be as simple as the end of the kitchen table or as elaborate as a desk with a lamp in a special place (perhaps your child’s room)
  • make certain the necessary supplies are available ~ pencils, eraser, paper, crayons, etc.
  • set aside a special time for homework each day; don’t wait until your child is nearly ready for bed, it is likely they will be too tired
  • insist that the television be turned off so that your child can concentrate; sometimes playing music at low volume helps to mask household sounds (hint: studies have shown that listening to Mozart improves a child’s ability in maths!)
  • if there is a lot of homework, help your child to structure the time; set a timer and encourage short breaks of a few minutes
  • sign your child’s Homework Planner for the appropriate week and report any concerns to your child’s Form Tutor via the Planner

All pupils receive homework from their teachers.
In years 7, 8, and 9 pupils will be set one hour of homework each evening. In years 10 and 11 this rises to one

and a half hours each evening.

All subject areas run after school sessions to help with homework tasks. In addition, the school library is open every lunchtime and can be used as a quiet area where children can complete homework assignments. A computer room is also open most lunchtimes for work.

Rooms are also made available for pupils who arrive at school early and wish to complete homework before morning registration.

An after school homework club is run on two evenings each week.
